Decoding a VIN in Scania?
VIN numbers began to be used as early as 1954 in the United States. The first numbers, however, looked different. Car manufacturers, for example, Scania already had their cars marked with VIN numbers. Signs of this type have started to be used by producers in Europe.
However, it was not until the 1980’s (and more specifically in 1981) that global producers, along with American producers, eventually agreed on this issue. Officially standardization of the format took place in 1981 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the United States. Since then, sold cars should contain a 17-character VIN, which will not contain the letters I (I), O (o) or P (q) (to avoid confusion with the numbers 1 and 0).
